Palamino | Don’t Lie to Your Friends
Greg
Quite simply, I loved this track. Palamino combines “Explosions in The Sky” backing guitar riffs with a haunting baritone narration of a failed relationship, life, and the everlonging question of death. Lead vocalist Pete Clark foreshadows the strength of his bravado in blips across the first half of the song and delivers a satisfying final minute in a crescendoing explosion of sound. A proper 2020 introduction for Palamino–super amped to see where they expand to.

Look, I tend to like fuzzed production, when done right it adds personality to a track and allows for strengths to be accentuated. Palamino uses their heavy, fuzzed, backing instrumentation in just such a way. Pete Clark’s lead vocals are highlighted quite nicely throughout the track without taking away from a crowded but not indistinguishable instrumentation, and his near cries and narrative high points throughout the song are underscored in just such a satisfying way, “I’M BURNING RUBBER ON THE DRIVE HOME.” I think Palamino is getting ready to bring us some truly special stuff in the near future.

This track stretched a little thin. It’s a bummer too because I am over the moon about how the track ends. I’ve heard songs where stark juxtapositions and changeups work. This one just did not land for me. The upfront meandering and mumbling was too much to get through for me to really enjoy the big ending.
