Meet S.C.A.B.

I love a good acronym almost as much as I love the word acronym. NYC’s latest post-punk project understand the power of the good word(s), forming the absolutely excellent S.C.A.B.

I have no idea what each letter is meant to stand for, but it doesn’t matter. These babies are pretty new on the scene and pack a punch guaranteed to leave a mark…or dare I say SCAB??

Below, we chat about their very first projects, favorite family traditions, and RPS strategies…

Check it out below and tell your friends. ALL OF THEM!

Also visit our pals Spirit Goth Records for a full line up of cool peeps!

MEDICAL QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS, A Mad-Lib by, S.C.A.B.

PATIENT: Doctor, whenever I stand up I get all STEEZY in my WHIP. Is this serious?
DOCTOR: Sounds as if you have an inflammation of your TIMS. You need an anti-TATS shot.

PATIENT: Doctor, I'm thinking of having my SON removed. Is this a BRICK operation?
DOCTOR: No, the operation is quite CRUSTY, providing you have DEAD ASS kidneys.

PATIENT: What are the symptoms of an overactive BODEGA
DOCTOR: High sizzurp.pressure. Also, severe heads in the abdomen.

PATIENT: Doctor, is it possible for a 7-year-old man to have a chrome dome?
DOCTOR: Only if he doesn't watch his GUAP and eats too many KICKS.

If you could pick one species of animals besides people to become 15 times their current size which one would you choose? Why?

I don’t understand why THIS is the hardest question for me to answer. I think I would honestly be terrified to see any animal 15 times its size. I guess if I had to choose I would pick a dwarf hamster because they would end up being around the size of a large dog and they are cute and harmless.

Some Questions with S.C.A.B.

What was your first band/musical project?Alyse: Its a lot of push and pull then eventual bliss.

I was in a band called SORFINGR. We played a lot of Judas Priest and Madina Lake covers. We were awful. I basically learned how to play drums in this band. I also wrote my first melody and lyrics to a song called Avenue.  Lyrics went a lil something like this “I can’t stand the sight of you, I’ll be alone on this avenue…” It could have been worse.

Where/how do you put your thoughts when creating a song?

I am pretty much all over the place. It can get kind of messy because I’ll have voice memos with guitar ideas and me murmuring nonsense, lyric ideas on note pad that are fairly stream of consciousness, and more fleshed out ideas of songs on my laptop or garage band for Iphone. Eventually I take the leap to stick with an idea and make a full demo. I wish I could be that person who writes some sweet lyrics in a notebook and has the whole song planned out in their head already but I like the way I work.

Do you have a favorite family tradition?

Growing up me and my family were Catholic so we would sing Happy Birthday to baby Jesus every Christmas Eve at midnight. I remember thinking this was hilariously insane even as a little kid. We don’t do it anymore but I think it’s probably my favorite tradition we have done because of its absurdity. We also eat 12 grapes on New Year’s Eve when the ball drops and wish on every grape for every month of the year. Wishing hard on each grape is very reflective because then you get to visualize how you’d like this next year of your life to look like.

Do you think you could beat Tony the Tiger in an arm wrestle?

I would take an admirable loss but our very own elite climber Cory Best would give that snide macho tiger a run for his money. There is nothing Mr. Best can’t climb and he’s got the guns to prove it.

What was the first song you learned how to play?

I think the first song I attempted to learn how to play was Let it Be by The Beatles. My dad tried to teach me and my sister guitar when we were young so we would go through the Beatles songbook trying to play songs together. I hated guitar back then but it is a very sweet memory I have of us.

How do you achieve “beauty and balance” in your music?

I ask myself this every single day… Everything constantly operates in a push-pull motion around me. I just try to capture the beautiful moments that I think are most important to my own personal growth whether they are bad or good. They could be anything from actual events to realizations I have about myself at that time. Being able to process the turbulence in my life through music allows me to appreciate the beauty around me in a different, curious, and poignant ways.

If you could only use 10 words for the rest of your life what would they be?

dude/ sick / tight / what / food / please / beautiful / I / love / you

What are your top albums released in 2019 so far?

The Hecks - My Star

Divino Nino - Foam

Crumb - Jinx

Discus - Something has Happened

Omni – Networker

Corridor – Junior

Horse Jumper of Love – So Divine

If your band had a mascot that would attend all of your shows, what would it be and do?

A certain skunk named Pepe le Peu. He would charm everyone in the audience and assist us in selling merch. He also knows how to clear a room when it’s time to go home.

Are you better at thumb wrestling or rock paper scissors? What’s your strategy?

I’m pretty bad at thumb wrestling; I only ever win by cheating. I am however pretty damn good at RPS. I could tell you my tried and true strategy but then I would have to kill you Sean…

How do you toe the line between pop and post-punk?

There are so many blurred lines in modern subgenres. I would like to think we are just helping that along. I fell in love with the angular guitar approach and it really resonated with me because I like keeping harmony and counterpoint interesting for myself and listeners. I love gnarly post-punk but I also love well-written songs that are approachable to any audience. I think I will explore more of both ends of the spectrum in our next release. For now let us know if you think our approach is, in fact, steezy or not!

Any final comments? (This is your electronic soapbox for one last answer.)

Keep an eye out for our music videos coming out next year along with our album Beauty and Balance! They should be a jolly good romp and you can see us try to act for the first time. Other than that reach out to us and keep in touch, I would love to hear from anyone who is interested in our tunes :).
