Would you rather…
Whose face would you rather have on the back of your head Shia Lebouf or Martha Stewart?
Hmm… I would rather have Shia Lebouf. I have a soft spot for him and his antics, despite his controversial actions.
Some questions with Jordan Segal
When is your favorite time of the day to work?
My preferred time to work, when I can, is midmorning and the afternoon. I think I am sharpest in the morning and also have a lot of energy that I need to get out.
What are your favorite galleries/museums in New York and why?
My favorite museum is the Neue Galerie. German and Austrian Expressionism is my favorite art movement and I always love their shows. There are two Brooklyn based galleries, La Bodega Gallery and Established Gallery, that I began frequenting a lot. They both show emerging artists from all wakes of life and have a nice community vibe to them.
What made you want to become an artist?
I think it started when I was a kid. I always liked art class and people liked what I made. That kind of goaded me on to take it more seriously as I got older. It wasn't until I entered college that I really began to think more critically about how I want to spend my life. I decided then to declare to myself that I am “an artist.”
How do you develop the characters in your illustrations?
When I draw or make any art I don’t think too much about developing the characters. They usually come to me when I am daydreaming and then continue developing them through the act of making.
What are the pros and cons of being an artist in New York?
New York City is simultaneously a very challenging and a great place to be an artist. The major con of being an artist in New York is that real estate is so expensive. Most people end up working at home, splitting a studio or renting a very small studio. That is a major challenge, but my only real complaint. The best part is by far the amount of artists, galleries, and museums that are in the city. I still think that if you want to “make it” as an artist you need to be in NYC.
What other artistic mediums would you like to explore?
I’m interested in every form of visual art really. I like drawing, painting, and sculpture. I have not dabbled too much in printmaking and would want to learn how to make strong graphic prints. I love looking at prints and would love to make some of my own.
If every word you said for the rest of your life had to start with the same letter which letter would you choose? Why?
I would choose the letter S. I think it S is a funny-sounding letter and would make for lots of whimsical and goofy conversations.
Any final comments? (This is your electronic soapbox for one last answer.)
I urge everyone to keep making and thinking about art during this crazy period in history! I'm excited to see what people make when this is all over.
