Cindy | Never Let me Go (Part II)

The beat is catchy, the synth-y sounds are fun, the vocals are eery (in a good way) but the lyrics are shallow. Which maybe is the point? The true artist behind this moniker (performed by sexy young thang, Blue LoLån), is Kai Hugo AKA Palmbomen II who described the sound as “shoegaze/Italo disco album containing both ballads and dance songs”. Cindy is based on some forgotten character for the x-files who he seems to have created as if she’s living in her own universe, part 3D animation, part reality. I’m on board but, having just learned that vaporware is a thing and I’ve been a unknowing fan all along, no surprise there.

Never Let Me Go (Part II) is vaporwave matured. From the early days of Macintosh Plus memed on /mu/ to it’s semi mainstream emergence, vaporwave has always been the genre where I just thought it was old 80’s citypop slowed down. But Cindy twists the genre in a different direction, a direction with spoken word, poetry, and overall originality. I liked this track a lot, that being said I wouldn’t really keep listening to it.

This song was a little frustrating. While I did appreciate the slowed down acid house vibe, fit with baseline, and classic drum track, the song felt like it was lacking something to make it complete. At the very least there is no reason for this track to go one for longer than five minutes. As a pop song if you are going to make a song that long it is going to need something to keep it from getting stale.

Can a genre of music take human form? Cindy, apparently, is the physical manifestation of vaporwave. Is “Never Let Me Go (Part II)” somewhat aesthetically distressing? Big yes, but in the same “good” distressing way that Twin Peaks is. Cindy, who I assume is the same Cindy as Cindy Savalas, appears to have taken on a life and musical career outside of being an extraterrestrial being who’s the subject of a Palmbomen II song. If it sounds as if I’ve had aneurysm while writing that last sentence, I haven’t, I promise. Anyway, If you like vaporwave and DEEP INTERNET LORETM you’ll like this and will probably be extremely entranced by Cindy. I mean I like vaporwave. But, did Cindy keep me up until 3 AM scouring 5 years worth of vaporwave music on YouTube trying to uncover the identity of Justin? Maybe (yes).

I was expecting a little more from this track. Its spoken word introduction built up my hope for uniqueness but ultimately fell flat and repetitive.
