Meet Carcosa

We are in a metal mooooood and y’all are just gonna have to DEAL. Besides, this band brings a whole new type of heavy to the genre that you won’t wanna miss.

Largely an underground project, Long Island’s Carcosa will obliterate your senses with their ingenuity and onslaught of noise. These fellas don’t let up, mixing pure dissonance with thoughtful lyrics.

Below, these hard hitters discuss the true origin of their name (and it’s off the charts), classify their spicy riffs, and reveal their desire to sonically exhaust us all.

Take a breath and dive on in…

Would You Rather

have the power to make things you touch turn invisible or shrink?

I'll say shrink under the assumption that I could still see them a bit.

Some questions with Carcosa

If you couldn’t say “musician,” what would you call yourselves and why?

We'd be called Artists, I think. Not very creative, I know but honestly, that's how we approach it anyway.

Where does the name, "Carcosa" come from?

When we started (in late 2014) we were all collectively obsessed with the first season of True Detective on HBO. Used a sound clip from the 1st episode on the 2015 Demo too.

On a scale of one to ten, what would you rate your band name?

12

If your music was a sandwich, what would it be? Why?

If our music was a sandwich it would be an Italian hero with hot peppers because we are flavorful individuals and our riffs are spicy.

How do you strive to innovate within metal music?

We're not really trying to break down any genre barriers. We just try to do what we like to the best of our ability and we don't conform to any rules.

What other genres have influenced your sound and creative approach, if any?

We all love classic rock, grind core, death metal, black metal, sludge, and heavy hardcore. We try to dabble in a little bit of everything in our approach to songwriting.

What has been a recent innovation in music that you admire?

No specific innovation comes to mind but there are always musical acts popping up the push things forward little by little. Bands like Sulphur Aeon, Hundred Year Old Man, and Drab Majesty come to mind. All are vastly different genres but fit within the scope of what is expected of those genres but they also represent an evolutionary step.

Can you describe the rationale behind playing without breaks when performing live?

We want to pummel you to death with sound. We want you to walk away from the set sonically exhausted, yet aroused.

What do you hope listeners will glean from your music?

When you think about how fucked up things are in our world it's hard to fathom why people aren't more angry. A lot of our songs have little hope for the future. Reality isn't hope. Reality is bleak.

What bands or other acts would you love to collaborate with?

Anything involving Matt Pike.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

Like anything else it's a popularity contest and sometimes great things get overlooked.

How would you describe the current state / scene of metal and underground music?

2019 was an absolutely AMAZING year for metal. So many good releases. There are awesome bands popping up all the time on Long Island from every genre. I think the music scene at large is doing just fine.

What are your top five favorite animals?

Yacks, Llamas, Goats, Narwals, and Elephants

Any final comments? (This is your electronic soapbox for one last answer.)
