Meet Zuli

Rolling Stone once included Zuli on a list of artists “You Need To Know”, and I can whole heartedly agree that y’all need to know.

Hello jangly guitar and hooky, multi-layered vocals. This is Indie Pop for fans of the OG indie pop of our youth — Weezer and Rooney and the like. It’s like immediate rays of sunshine are bouncing out of your speakers and into your orbit, so really, what’s not to like?

We called this sunny singer in for some serious questioning. Below, we touch on the importance of oversized clothing, his ideal familial collaboration, and reveals his bagel order. (Disclaimer: Raisins and hot sauce are involved.)

Winter is coming my friends. Scroll through to get all the warm and fuzzy feelings.

Would You Rather…

have everything you wear always be three sizes too big or two sizes too small?

Three sizes too big no question. half of my clothes are like that anyways lol. I like to let it breathe.

Some Questions with Zuli

What is the worst tourist attraction in NYC? Why?

Times Square. Cool for 5 minutes but sooooo many better places to
see.

What was the music scene like growing up in Long Island? Did it influence your work today?

Musically it didn’t inspire me too much, but the hustle to play live definitely motivated me to book shows and get comfortable on stage. One of the most valuable things I’ve learned so far

What are your top three used emojis? Do you have any?

💛💫😂

Describe your ideal home studio set-up.

couple guitars, P bass, midi board and some good speakers. A few compressors and a drum kit if possible.

Your latest album seamlessly blends folk, pop, rock, and psych. Which genre would you say has had the biggest influence on your sound?

This is a tough one. On one hand, I think all of the psych and Avant music I listen to is what inspires me to be myself and do things outside of the box, but I’m a sucker for a good melody. I will forever love and be inspired by pop music. That being said, the two go hand and hand for me. Straddling that line is what makes something really special.

What member of your family would you love to collaborate with?

Probably my dad. He’s not a musician, but he introduced me to so much amazing music growing up and was a big factor in me being a musician

Do you collect anything, what is it and why?

I guess clothes? lol I’m always looking for something new but I’m very hesitant to get rid of anything. Fashion goes in cycles and I always feel like as soon as I let something go I’m gonna wish I still had it.

What was the greatest challenge making On Human Freakout Mountain?

Getting the music to seamlessly move from my head into the computer

What is the best street food in NYC?

I can’t eat street food because I’m allergic to sesame, so I stay away from it at all costs lol but everyone knows it’s halal guys across from Radio City Music Hall

What is the next milestone you hope to hit in your career?

Making it across the pond. Getting this new record off the ground.

What was your first job?

eBay Salesman

If the price was no object what would be the perfect bagel?

Keep it simple. Bacon Egg and Cheese on a Cinnamon Raisin bagel with hot sauce

Any final comments? (This is your electronic soapbox for one last answer.)
