Washer
Meet Quigley
Anyone who lives in NYC knows how darn coveted a washer-dryer situation is. Does anyone else save up a month’s worth of laundry to warrant making the trip to the laundromat?
Oh! What luxury it would be to not schlep your soiled duds down the street and find someone else’s sock in your underwear drawer.
Alas, I digress. I cannot convince your super to buy you an electrolux, but I can present to you Washer. They won’t get your jeans clean but they will get your toes tapping. Part of Brooklyn’s DIY scene, these boys released a split with Bethlehem Steel last year, and keep doing cool things.
We caught up with Mike Quigley for a quick sec. Below, we discuss airport food regrets, recall some of Will Smith’s best work, and implore you to support artists directly.
Read this then go do your dang laundry. It’s time.
Car of the Year, a Mad-lib with Quigley
It's here, the all-new DOOLEY. The most luxurious FIREPLACE you'll ever drive! The only four-door SPITTLE that comes equipped with dual air SKINS, power SPIDERS, and contoured, plush leather WINDOWSILLS. And, believe it or not, it is the only car in its class that can catch up to a hundred thousand FISH without needing a GREYWATER change or a MEAT tune-up. Run, do not FAIL to your nearest DOOLEY dealer and feast your ORGANS on the car that Motor SUNSCREEN magazine calls the SLIMY BARNACLE of the year. As always, we save the best for last. When you see the sticker price, you are sure to shout, "YIKES!!"
Would you rather
have a twenty-foot long tongue or a hundred foot long arms? What would you do?
Arms! I’d do that thing where you tap someone on the shoulder but then you move out of their view but like from a hundred feet away. And rescue kittens from trees.
Some Questions With Quigley
What was the last thing you bought that you regret?
Airport Popeyes chicken. Popeyes rules. But not this one.
Where would be objectively the best place to throw a birthday party?
Deep-sea scientific research station where the animals have been mutated to talk and hangout and after the cake, you help them break out.
What was the most fun you had on your 2019 tour?
We got to skateboard a lot, despite both of us being terrible at it. Or swimming in lake Michigan. Or the city museum in st. Louis but it was raining so we missed out on some of it
Which are better Legos or Kinex?
legos
If you had to be on one reality TV show which one would it be? What would you do?
Deadliest Catch. Make bank. Become captain.
Where do you begin when starting to create a new song?
sually with a guitar or bass riff. I keep a list of phrases and ideas that I then comb over to fit into an instrumental part. So I guess technically some of the words are written down first but the songs get built up before I start thinking about the lyrics in any context.
What was the last song you had stuck in your head?
Will Smith, Wild Wild West
Who does the illustrations on the covers of your work?
Kieran did the paintings for the two full length covers. I do the graphic design/doodles for the other parts of the jacket & some of the split covers.
Do you have any upcoming projects you are excited about?
We’re slowly working on our 3rd album right now. Like, real slowly.
Do you derive inspiration from past decades of music? If so what draws you to that music in particular
For sure. Obviously into guitar rock stuff from the last 30 years. I think it’s a twofold thing, the sound itself but also the different scenes that built up regionally and all have their own characteristics and crossovers. Especially stuff that might be thought of as more “amateur”, whether that just means like self-released or stuff from small independent labels. I’m a big ol’ fan of people making stuff by whatever means they have available to them.
What was your most memorable performance, and why?
Hmm. The final big ups show at bowery ballroom because it was very bittersweet and that’s probably the biggest place & crowd we’ll ever play to and there were lots of familiar faces we hadn’t seen in a while.
Do you have a piece of musical gear that you really want? What is it/Why?
tascam portastudio 424 mkii. I think creative limitations help folks make cool stuff. And demoing songs on a 4 track sounds like a nice fix for my tendency to over-complicate initial song ideas.
Any final comments? (This is your electronic soapbox for one last answer.)
Buy stuff from bands directly through their bandcamp or similar if you can. Avoid ranked lists. Go back to music from any time, don’t just “discover” new new new. There’s way too many people making music to only keep up with the most talked-about shit each year.
