Meet Thick

If y’all haven’t heard of Thick, you’re doing it wrong. Allow me to introduce this trio of feminist, Joan Didion-appreciating punks. Born from the DIY scene, this crew is no stranger to mosh pits and has shredded their way into the hearts of many.

Known in all the boroughs (but mostly Brooklyn), these pals deliver high energy, feel good tunes. They’re here for a good time, and a long time…fresh of the release of a self-titled EP, Thick’s not slowing down anytime soon.

Below, we discuss the state of punk in NYC, text message breakups, and their dream bank robbery scenario, including excel spreadsheets.

Buckle up, ‘cuz it’s a ride.

Masterpiece Theater: A Mad Lib By Thick

No story ever told seems to SENSUALLY capture the hearts and JOCK STRAPS of GLITTERY readers as does the legend of King Arthur and the GHOST HUNTERS of the SLIME. If we choose to believe the Arthur legend and go along with the story that this MELODIC king removed from a FURRY stone the TIGHT sword called Excalibur, then we are giving ourselves permission to enjoy this evening's performance. So without further ado let us visit the kingdom of Camelot, where MINTY knights perform heroic PUGS, rescue MORTICIANS in UNDIES, and ride off on majestic SALMON in search of adventure.

Would You Rather…

cry spiders or sneeze worms? Why?

Kate: Definitely sneeze worms, they'd slide right out! Crying spiders so they can crawl all over your face sounds horrible...

Nikki: Sneeze worms! Spiders scare me

Shari: Worms, I already sneeze a lot!

Some Questions with Thick

What was your first live performance like?

Kate: My first ever performance, I had only been playing bass for a few weeks, so I really had nothing to lose... My first show with THICK was during Northside a few years ago. We had practiced together twice-ish and it was super fun and very sweaty, but I hadn't even learned all the lyrics yet!

Nikki: I was SO scared. It was at Matchless and I was afraid I would forget all the lyrics or mess up on the guitar. Once we got on stage it was really fun, a total mess but it felt so good! Before we started playing I used to be afraid of making mistakes but now I get a rush from trying a new solo or a new song, it feels like I'm putting myself out there and I know It will only get better.

Shari: I was 17 and played my first show at Fat Baby's in the Lower East Side. I remember being really nervous and excited. I also had a really bad emo side bang hair cut.

What is the creative process typically like between the three of you?

Kate: It kind of changes every time we approach a new song. Someone usually comes in with an idea, then the songs get mulled over and morphed by everyone's parts, ideas and lyrics until it's a fully-formed song.

Nikki: Yup! Like Kate said, one of us will come in with an idea or a riff and then we totally change it. Usually, there will be one thing we like and then we just take it from there until it feels like THICK song.

Shari: We all take part in writing the melodies/lyrics for the skeleton of a song-lately we've all been doing this for homework! Overall we usually work with someone’s idea or jam on something and it changes 1000x before it becomes a THICK Bop.

Where are you usually at a house party?

Kate: Upfront and center haha.

Nikki: By the bar

Shari: Sitting on the couch and petting a dog

What is your opinion on the state of punk in NYC?

Kate: It's always changing. Right now there's a lot of more cerebral-slanted, art-punk coming up.

Nikki: regardless of what phase it's in, there is always a community

Shari: I always saw NYC as a birthplace for Punk. I see it as a genre of music that's always changing end evolving. It's like how iced coffee became cold brew, and Milk became Oat Milk. It's ever-changing and will always get done what it need to do.

What is your favorite word/phrase?

Kate: Well stick a finger up my a$$ and call me sally

Nikki: It's always something

Shari: It's funny cause...

Where do you capture your thoughts for a song? A notebook? Nowhere?

Kate: Some combination of a notebook my friend Alex gave me, the Notes app in my phone and Gmail drafts.

Nikki: Deff in my notebooks, or sometimes I'll be biking around and use my voice recorders to catch the melody

Shari: I usually have a melody/lyrics in my head and I'll write it down in my phone memos or record myself singing and playing.

What are your top five favorite bands active in NYC right now?

Kate: Surfbort, Big Bliss...

Nikki: Gustof, Public Practice, Whiner

Shari: Iron Chic (Long Island), Big Bliss, Surfbort, Pom Pom Squad, Cardi B

What was the first instrument you learned to play?

Kate: The Recorder.

Nikki: Guitar

Shari: Violin

Which was better Rock Band, Guitar Hero, or Dance Dance Revolution? Please explain why.

Kate: Rock Band, duhhhhh.

Nikki: GUITAR HERO cause you get to shred and be the center of attention

Shari: DDR! I used to have friends over every Thursday to come play this game.

Have you or would you ever break up with someone over text message? snap?

Kate: Nope! Have never, would never.

Nikki: YES but that's only because he didn't seem into it anymore so I just addressed it and got it over with

Shari: I did once because the relationship became Netflix & Silence. After six months I think the break up has to be done in person!

What is your dream bank robbery scenario? (location, methods, is it a success/mess)?

Kate: I think it would be a mess, because I'd feel too guilty to go through with it.

Nikki: Kate would be running the technology equipment in the surveillance van and would be scoping out the scene and would be communicating with me via in ear monitors. I would be wearing this really cool leather outfit and I'd be robbing a real rich person that doesn't need the money. The cash is hidden in the mansion in an office behind a painting and the rich person is asleep on the couch....but are they asleep? we don't know. there is tension. I am in the room with my cool leather gloves and hat, using some sort of silent machine that breaks open the safe and I take out all the cash, put in my black leather backpack and then... all of a sudden...a dog comes out of no where. A rottweiler. Alarms go off, lights go out. Red lasers. The rich person wakes up and I karate chop them back to sleep. I do some crazy somersaults and cartwheels and sprint out of the house and Shari is driving the getaway vehicle but accidentally locks the door when I try to open it. And every time I try to open it she locks it and it happens like 3 or 4 times and this crazy dog is getting closer and closer and then finally Shari opens the door and we all speed away and buy tickets to japan to play a show.

Shari: It would be something out of a 90's action movie where I have to go to a locker in an airport in Miami and get a key. After I get the key, I would go to the bank where Bruce Willis and Sandra Bullock would have gotten the money. Nicole would get Stockholm Syndrome, and Kate would be making an excel sheet about the operation.

Any final comments? (This is your electronic soapbox for one last answer.)

We're working on a new album that's going to come out in the Spring!

"Stay Gold, Pony Boy".
