The lo-fi pop revival never dies. New single from The Sweethearts ā€œSuzieā€ is basically a mainline of lo-fi weirdness in a similar, but perhaps stranger quadrant of this admittedly bizarre genre as sometime Sweetheartsā€™ collaborator Ariel Pink. This sort of thing isnā€™t normally my bag, and I do find the production to be really, really flat on this. However, the sheer weirdness of the track, the lyrics, the infectious keyboard melody, and the truly concerning harmonizations makes it almost impossible to turn a deaf ear to ā€œSuzieā€.

Suzie Suzie Yeah Yeahā€¦.yeah Iā€™m into it. Itā€™s hard not to imagine my parents in the east village, 1984ish embarrassingly dancing to something quite similar to this track. I thought The Sweethearts really nailed the psychedelic/80ā€™s pop combination well and infused some timely ā€œgotta get her rocks offā€ lyrics to push the envelope.

I kept trying to make connections to Siouxsie and The Banshees, then after the third or fourth listen I realized that the spelling was very different. I felt like a fool. Still I did learn a lot along the way, and that is what really matters. ā€˜Suzieā€™ by The Sweethearts tells the tale of an insatiable young lass who is having a wild time, swinging around, taking drugs and making their friends worry. This tale is set to the oh so familiar sound of throwback, Garage Rock/Power Pop that was inescapable in 2008.

For what it sets out to do itā€™s successful. The listener is left with an upbeat track made to be heard while you jump on a bed.
