Would You Rather

every dog in the world be replaced by giant crabs or giant bats. Please explain your answer.

Giant crabs - bats can fly.

Some questions with Stella Emmett

How did you get your start in music?

I have a musical family - both of my parents are songwriters & musicians. That definitely helped. My high school had an event called Coffeehouse where students would perform covers and original music, and I did that basically every year. Doing music made me feel special & I think helped me form an identity as a younger person (in middle school, high school). It still does those things!

What is your favorite candy to eat? Why?

Butterfinger - it's about that crunchy, honeycomb-esque texture.

Please explain your self-described genre of "Ikea core".

Honestly I thought Ikea core would be a cute thing to put in my Instagram bio so that's what I did. But after sitting with it for a while, I think Ikea core means a genre of music that works in the background but also holds up under closer inspection. I call Admirer easy listening for hard times, so I think that sums it up. If you just want to put my album on while you cook dinner or do yoga, I think that's great, but there's some words of wisdom there too if you're listening for them.

How important is collaboration in your creative process?

Really important. I have another producer that I consistently work with, Mike. He always gives me a rock-solid foundation to build off of when we're starting a new track. All of the people I collaborate with because I know they have something to teach me. I'm a better songwriter and producer because of the people I work with. I never want to operate in a vacuum where none of my musical choices get questioned because I know I make mistakes and the point is to put out something great. There is strength in numbers!

Describe your perfect day off.

At this point, having dinner and drinks with some friends on a patio somewhere would be a dream come true. But of course, it will be a while before something like that is appropriate.

Your latest album, Admirer, feels very personal. Do you ever find it intimidating to release emotional and introspective work?

When I'm writing songs I'm not necessarily thinking about the fact that other people will be hearing them, especially when it comes to the lyrics. Like a lot of songwriters, my songs are reactionary - something happens to me and I write a response or a reflection on that thing. However, recently I've been writing about experiences people close to me are having rather than just my own life, which I think shows a level of growth. I'd like to keep going down that road. Regardless, if I think too much about how my music will be received it would be very hard to finish anything. But yes, there is a period of anxiety when I put out new music where I realize the songs don't exclusively belong to me anymore. I think the thing is writing about genuine, emotional stuff is the best way to be relatable, to connect. And for me, that's the whole point.

If you could only wear one color for the rest of your life what would it be and why?

Lavender. It's calming and would age well with me. It's a color that brings me joy whenever I see it & also makes me feel hot. Sage green is a close second.

Any final comments? (This is your electronic soapbox for one last answer.)
