Pollyanna | Good for You

Mary

Their Spotify self describes them as ‘indie poptimism’. That’s witty and freakin cute…but missing the critical component, rock. Don’t stop here, their whole audio-discography is great, if you’re into indie poptimistic rock.

It’s super charged up, powerful and popping. Pollyanna while still in the blur of high energy emo influenced bands has a clear streak of rock running through it’s core which makes for some delightful moments throughout the track.

I think we’ve gotten to the point in music where everyone knows their little slice of music taste and everyone can tell if they will like a song or not. Pollyanna is stuck firmly in the power/diy/bedroom pop corner that I enjoy. Within the first couple of seconds you can determine whether or not you’re going to enjoy this track or not, and I did. Maybe others will see it differently, but I feel the track kinda falls into the camp of generic. But also don’t trust me I have no qualifications to judge music, I have a photo degree.

Humor me, let’s ignore for a moment obvious, and warranted, comparisons to other female fronted power-pop-punk bands that also start with the letter “P”. “Good for You” rips, it’s catchy as hell, it’s heartfelt, it’s everything you want and MORE from this sort of band. This track is a standout for its energy and pacing, seriously it’s hard not to groove to this thing a bit. But, you know it’s still that familiar power-pop rhythm, and Pollyanna brings it to us competently. What elevates this beyond a run of the mill power-pop song is Jill’s bittersweet lyrics and breathless delivery. Seriously, she gives these ever lengthening verses a rushed out-of-breath quality that plays nicely off the exasperation of the lyrics. Coupled with the way the band comes together to crash into a contagiously shout-able chorus and you’ve got earworm gold, gold that is “Good for You.”

Apologies Dillon but, she sounds like haley williamson paramore's first album. THERE, I had to say it, someone had to say it, now let’s move on. It’s a rightful comparison and I see Good For You as only a fraction of the vocal capabilities for Pollyanna. All in all the track gives enough familiatiliry to listen through and enjoy- but I’m curious to see more of a unique edge with their future sound.
