Plight
Meet Plight
Brooklyn is such a hot bed for alt rock, it’s hard for bands to cut through all the noise and vapes and puddles of Bud. But Plight stands out on its own two feet…well, technically eight feet ‘cuz there’s four of ‘em.
Any who, if you’re after some good broody moody moodiness with some luscious shoegaze and lots of air to breathe, check these pups out.
Following their recent B-Sides release, we chat with the quartet about bad blenders, their Real Housewives dreams, and the universal love of bodega felines.
Y’all know what to do, at this point. :)
A self-portrait by, Plight
Would You Rather
your sense of smell or sense of hearing be a hundred times stronger? Why?
Matt: I’d rather have my hearing be a hundred times stronger so that I can actually hear what Josh and Anthony are saying (they're low talkers).
What is the worst mixer of all time?
Josh: Nutribullet.
What is the collaborative process like between all of you?
Matt: Usually Anthony or I bring in a riff, part of a song, or a whole song and we jam on that until everything gets worked out. Lyrics / melodies are usually written by me or Anthony and we work together until it's complete.
What is your practice space like?
Josh: A literal coffin.
Did you go through any musical phases growing up? Has this influenced the music you are making now?
Josh: I’m always going through musical phases. Some of them have more influence than others. I think whenever you're making music in a group, anything that comes out is going to be a collection of what everyone listened to growing up, as well as what they're listening to now. It's part of what makes writing music with other people so interesting.
If you could be on any reality TV show, what would it be and why?
Josh: Real Housewives of NYC so I could persuade Bethany Frankel to be my sugar momma and give me a stake in Skinnygirl.
What is the best book you’ve most recently read?
Josh: Norwegian Wood. I wish Murakami was my Dad.
Do you see a relationship between tempo and emotion? Does this impact your creative process?
Matt: Definitely. In recent years I've been drawn to slower tempo stuff and it's definitely influenced my creative process heavily. I like a lot of faster tempo stuff too and I try to take those two styles and influences and combine them into something new. I think slower tempo stuff tends to be “sadder” by nature while faster stuff generates more “positive” feelings, but I think it’s best to not stay in one lane and try mix both faster and slower stuff to create something that draws from two different things that you enjoy.
Where do you get your news? Do you read the news?
Josh: SNL and late-night talk shows mostly.
Do you have a hat you like to wear?
Matt: I wear a beanie pretty much every day during winter and I swap out of various baseball hats during the summer.
How do you feel about bodega cats?
Matt: I love every single one. I think we all do.
What has been your favorite experience as a band?
Josh: Drinking ayahuasca and seeing God.
Do you have any upcoming projects you are excited about?
Josh: I think we're doing another record?
Any final comments? (This is your electronic soapbox for one last answer.)
Josh: Alien Ant Farm is the greatest rock band of our generation.
Matt: Thanks for taking an interest in our band and allowing us to do this interview, we really appreciate it.
