Holy nostalgia bomb. Pink Mexico transported me back into 2015 when I was an angsty teen that only listened to punk, hardcore, surf rock, and garage rock. Now I’m an angsty adult that still listens to all of those but have also diversified my listening taste. If you mosh at basement shows or used to mosh at basement shows, you will definitely like this album. They remind me of Together Pangea,  Wavves, and on some level FIDLAR.

Sad and Surf Rock aren’t things I tend to associate, and Pink Mexico’s Idiot Piss Illiterate is like a weird high energy cry session. The album is a tense acid freak out by way of FIDLAR, but unlike that band’s mid-bender marketable optimism, this has some decidedly scuzzy post-party vibes to it. The track Not Feeling Ok evokes the image of a man desperately trashing a Santa Monica hotel room in search of a cache of crystal meth at 5 AM. Is that an oddly specific image: yes. Is this album great in a specific way: also yes. Pink Mexico’s got a pretty unique sound, but the only other analog that comes to mind other than FIDLAR in the midst of a serious comedown are The Murlocs.

Surfy grunge? Grungy surf? Pink Mexico would have been my shit in high school. Lyrically and stylistically Idiot Piss Illiterate reminds me of early Wavves EP’s but with a more psychedelic flair. Most of the songs are on the louder side, but I think the standout track is the softer “Soda Pop Decay.” What a cool hazy tune. The echoing vocals and big laidback acoustic guitar on this one sound like Anton Newcombe at his most lucid.

Heavy Reverb, waves of cymbals, and crunchy guitar. The sound took me right back to the surf punk/psychedelic explosion that dominated the early 2010’s rock scene. Pink Mexico has been steadily releasing tracks since 2013 and they’ve really got a handle on the sound. “Idiot Piss Illiterate” is heavy, fast and mean. A strong entry to the genre for anyone who has love for it. “Not Feeling Ok” stands out as a slight departure from the surf punk sound prominent through the rest of the tracks. Without the expected drum beat and vocal style it dips into dark and exciting places.

Didn’t know surf grunge was a thing but if this is mosh music then I’m down to mosh. And by that I mean dance (aggressively).
