Idle Wave | Home (Single)

Guy Battaglia aka Idle Wave brings us, “Home” an emo indie ballad with a video and sound that caught me a little off guard. Something about empty swimming pools has always primed me for a bit more of a high energy affair, let’s blame it on Sum 41’s “In Too Deep”. “Home” is a bit downbeat and suppressed, but Guy’s emotional delivery and plainspoken lyrics kept me rapt. As Guy illustrates the loneliness that a house can elicit, especially when you're short an occupant, I couldn’t help but feel his palpable isolation. I can also see some hints of post-punky/party depression after the fleeting moments of joy run out and now you’re not jamming out to early 00’s pop-punk but instead you’re doing some dishes at 1 AM and wishing you still had someone there with you. See, that Sum 41 reference wasn’t totally just me making random connections in my very bored brain. All-in-all I’m definitely interested to see what the future holds for Idle Wave, Guy clearly has some lyrical chops and a lot on his mind, looking forward to hearing what an energetic Idle Wave track sounds like.

Idle Wave’s "Home" is a flatline. I am someone who likes driving slow emotional tracks. Even still I can not get behind this track. From start to finish there is no real progression. After the two minute mark there is a slight build up that only leads to more of the same. It’s a little funny when you see the contrast between the music video and the actual song. During the climax when the crowd is going nuts the music behind it is just as even tempered as the track started. I can understand this is not a joyful track. Thats fine. I can not tell if the intention was to make it as understated as the song ended up.
