Heavy Lids
Meet Heavy Lids
Everyone’s favorite rocker and popper just hopped down from surfing a crowd (not advised to do at this time) to have a lovely chat with us. In our latest interview, we talk about their new single L.A., hairstyles, and some other neat stuff. Check it out!
Two Truths and A Lie (Answer at the bottom)
I’m straight edge
I have a black belt in karate
I have a Shania Twain tattoo
Would you rather…
get in contact with ghosts or aliens? What would you say?
Aliens for sure, I would ask them if they could send me to a different timeline where the world isn’t a flaming sack of garbage.
Some questions with Heavy Lids
How has your COVID-19 experience been?
It started off grim as I contracted COVID19 and was super fucking sick for two weeks straight, once that passed and I had space to be creative that was cool. However, some of my gear died and that put shit on hold for a few weeks, which was a bummer. I’ve been pending on my unemployment claim for about 8 weeks, which is fucked. My wife and I have been getting a lot of quality time together that we wouldn’t normally have, so that’s been nice. So like, I guess you could say its been OK on the whole. Things could always be worse so I’m trying to stay as grateful as possible.
Your 2020 single “L.A” is a slight departure from your previous work. Was there a catalyst that brought on this change?
When I originally conceived ‘Heavy Lids’, I was doing pop songs and hardcore songs and putting them on the same releases. I really wanted to do both types of music because that’s what I fuck with, but it was kinda too confusing/too much of a demand on the listener and I felt like I wasn’t pushing either genre as far as I really wanted because I was trying to make things cohesive.
I felt like I needed to keep both things separate so late last year I started ‘Heavier Lids’, which is like a separate band where all my hardcore music lives and I kept doing the pop songs under ‘Heavy Lids’.
‘LA’ is the first track I’ve put out under ‘Heavy Lids’ since I made the split, and I really felt free to just do what I really wanted to do with it. It’s a fully immersive romantic new wave classic.
Where did you grow up? Did it shape the music you are making today?
I grew up in Australia, in the suburbs of Sydney. We had a little gang of friends that would hang out together and one of our friends older brothers would feed us rap and hip hop music. This was around the mid to late 90s, so it was like 2pac, Biggie, Da Brat, Foxy Brown, Wu Tang Clan – we lived for it. Living in NY now, it’s so funny to think back on that time. I don’t really feel that in any of my music. It wasn’t until much later when I got into the punk scene around 14 – 15 that I really got on my path and got to know the music that would shape what I’m doing now.
What hairstyle would you like to see become popular in 2020?
The COVID19 SHAVE, basically it’s a shaved head but you do it with your beard trimmer and the back is a little fucked.
Who are your favorite bands active in NYC right now?
Haram, The Misters, Krimewatch.
If you were running for mayor of New York, what would be your slogan be?
‘TWERKING PEOPLE FIRST’
What do you look forward to doing most when this quarantine wraps up?
Getting tattooed!!
