Meet Hayley Richman

Montreal-based and sad-song-loving Hayley Richman answered some questions we had regarding her inspiration, pet preferences, and many more nonsensical things that she made more than enough sense out of. We also learned more about her single “Marionette”, that you can listen to below. What are you still doing up here?! Scroll down and CHECK IT OUT.

Would you rather your favorite restaurant be modified to have massage chairs that are on at all times, or for it to have a clown in there doing clown things at all times?

Clowns doing clown things sounds terrifying. I would definitely take the massage chairs. It’s definitely a Japanese restaurant.

How long have you been making music?

I’ve been singing privately ever since I can remember but I only started releasing my recordings and writing songs within the past few years.

What was your first live performance experience like?

I was so nervous that I honestly can’t remember any of it. At one point my voice cracked and I felt like my heart sank into my chest and I wanted to crawl behind an amp and hide for the rest of the song. I feel a lot more comfortable about it now..

Are you a dog person or a cat person?

Probably dogs. I’m allergic to both, which sucks.

What is a band you would want to get a chance to tour with?

Nothing But Thieves. I’d love for Conor Ryan Mason to teach me how to sing properly.

Are there any musical artists you draw inspiration from?

Radiohead, Lana Del Rey, Jeff Buckley.. those are some big ones but pretty much everyone I listen to inspires me in some way.

How many legs are too many legs? Please explain your answer.

Tour legs? Never too many. Centipede legs? Always too many. Human legs? I guess it couldn’t hurt to have a couple extra. I would run faster and please the foot fetishists.

Do you drink coffee? If you do how do you take your coffee?

I drink too much coffee, if I’m out it’s usually a cappuccino (with almond milk) and if I’m at home just a little bit of cream.

What was the intention with this latest Single “Marionette”?

I had originally released it a while ago and then I got the chance to make two of my originals into a double 7” vinyl to be released with SoundEvolution Music, a company from Staten Island. I chose that one and an older track called “Take My Soul” and remastered them for vinyl release because we thought those were some of the strongest from my existing catalogue. For me, “Marionette” was about obsession and control, but it could resonate differently depending on the mood..

If you could have any superpower, what would it be (doesn’t need to be music related)?

The ability to know exactly who someone is at first meeting. I’d know right away who to get close to and I’d never be deceived, manipulated or used. Like mind reading except I’m overly cynical and pragmatic..

Any final comments? (This is your electronic soapbox for one last answer.)

I would write something here but the music will speak for itself. That is my way of telling you that there will, in fact, be new original music coming out soon. I’m excited to show how much I’ve grown musically since I was posting covers a year or so ago. Oh, and thanks for interviewing me.
