Some questions with Hayfitz

How did you come to develop your unique vocal style?

It's funny, when I was younger all I wanted to do was sing in falsetto and I never could figure it out no matter how many lessons I got... It finally (kinda) happened when I started singing in my high school's choir and suddenly I had a falsetto - I just went from there! I think a lot of singing, at least for me really, is just your body changing over the years and you have to just roll with it.

Do you have any house plants? How are they doing?

I am quite the plant dad, yeah! I'm currently in LA visiting home so I can't say for sure but our about dozen plants were thriving last time I checked :) I will admit, the anxiety about our plants dying is the real deal in these times when we spend all our days at home.

What kinds of feelings do you want to elicit from your listeners?

I hope at least this first record can be an introspective companion for listeners while traveling or going on solo walks/hikes/bike rides. Most of my relationship with music these past few years has been to seek some sort of calmness and help my brain slow down - so if any of that happens while people are listening that would make me quite a happy camper. And if there's anything in these songs that can help someone get through a difficult time, especially with all that's happening in the world this year, that's a really beautiful bonus. I'm ever grateful for any message I receive from a listener about how the record has been healing for them emotionally, that's the stuff that keeps me going more than anything.

Do you find writing and singing songs to be a cathartic experience for you? Has this project helped you get through anything in your life?

Definitely. It's been a saving grace for some of my darkest moments these past few years. I feel like artists are fortunate in how when we experience pain, sadness, even depression we have this immediate outlet for processing that's productive both to our mental health and eventually to our careers.

What is your least favorite chore?

Scrubbing the tub, easy.

Can you tell us more about the narrative running through your album “Capsules”?

Capsules was for the most part written about a few brief but forever impactful encounters I had between 2018-2019. I've spent tons of time attempting to allow pivotal moments and relationships in my life to just be what they are in the moment versus trying and failing to make those moments last indefinitely- which almost always results in diminishing returns and a loss of profundity of those memories. As my dear friend and former roommate put it (paraphrased)~ sometimes you have to just close a capsule and wait for the right time to reopen it, well knowing that time may never present itself. You have to come to peace with that fact and just be grateful you got to experience it in the first place. I think that's some of the best advice I've ever been given and it gave such a strong foundation to this record for me.

Are you an introvert or an extrovert? Has this in any way shaped your music?

It depends on the situation. I find myself able to be super extroverted in one situation but equally if not more introverted in another. This project embodies much more of my quiet, introverted side but my other project S.C.A.B., that I play drums in, is certainly an expression of my extrovertedness.

Any final comments? (This is your electronic soapbox for one last answer.)

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE VOTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ps I've got some b-sides from Capsules coming soon and maybe even a music video :)
