Gymshorts
Meet Gymshorts
Gymshorts! A band with passion and musk. A band that is sure of themselves. They know what they want and they say it louder than you. This is evident in their tracklist on Bandcamp which is set in all caps. It is also evident in their music which is a head-banging beer spilling good time.
Down in the interview, we get into their favorite places to drive, their songwriting process, and karaoke secrets. Get down there and check it out.
Some questions with Gymshorts
What's your songwriting process like? Do you write the lyrics first and the music follows or vice versa?
Usually, I write some lyrics in my head while I’m doing other stuff or driving and then later I’ll put them to chords and kind of write the song that way!!
With regards to style/lyrics/music/etc, where do you draw inspiration from?
Anything that makes me laugh!!
If applicable, how does gender play into your role as the frontwoman of a stoner punk band?
I think it just means people think they can say stuff to me like “oh sick !! who’s girlfriend is carrying in all the gear!”
Do you think it's impacted how people perceive your music in any way or do you not really think about it?
I don’t totally think too much about it!
What's your favorite food to eat on the road while touring? Any specific chains/orders/etc.?
I really love to eat really clean healthy food especially touring! My favorite thing is probably a rice bowl with avocado and tofu and quinoa with ginger and cucumbers and soy sauce and whatever other veggies they’ve got. but umm also I really love sushi and Thai food! and burritos! I don’t drink anymore so any money I used to spend on alcohol now I just spend on eating well :)
What was your first live performance like (with either the current or original members)?
The first live Gymshorts show was actually pretty hilarious. I think we played the news cafe and we played as a three-piece and the drummer had never played with us before but had just gotten off a bus from NY and hadn’t slept at all the night before. I think it was a pretty sloppy show haha.
What's your favorite part of the country for live shows? Either performing or touring or both.
I really love playing the west coast and the midwest. I think because it’s so far from where I grew up and was so foreign to me when we started touring. I love the long drives and the change in scenery over there.
Was music a big part of your life growing up?
Yeah definitely. I always loved singing and listening to music.
Go-to karaoke song?
I can’t tell u !!! it will ruin the surprise if we ever do karaoke together!!
Any final comments? (This is your electronic soapbox for one last answer.)
If you’re craving candy, eat some !!!!
