Meet Gilah

Gilah is the experimental shoegaze project of the lovely Gil Israel. As Gilah Gil produced gorgeously extruded and stretched works. The tracks invite the listener in to wander through the reflections and reverberations. Get to know the artist a little better as we chat about their debut release “From Where I'm Standing”.

“MASTERPIECE THEATER” A Fill in the Blank With Gilah

Young people today would rather listen to a good rock music concert than to Johann Sebastian SANDLER or to Ludvig von KOSTON. Rock music is played by TRAILBLAZING groups of young men who wear their hair below their WOOKS. They also wear very odd and colorful MYCELIA and often have beards. The groups have attractive names such as "The LYNXES" or "TOBEY MAGUIRE and The Three WHITE CLAWS." They usually play electric ARTISANAL CHEESES. One member of the group usually sits on a raised platform and sets the rhythm by beating his UNFILTERED KOMBUCHA. The songs are mostly about some fellow who has been rejected by his HIMALAYAN SALT LAMP. They are very sad and when young girls hear them, they often get tears in their SOOTHING WATERCOLOR PAINTINGS.

Would You Rather

have snails for hair or large bats for feet? Please explain your answer?

Snails for hair I think, as I imagine it would be something like an ever-present scalp massage if you can get past the knee jerk repulsion of snail-slime. Though sonar feet (or 'Sonar soles,' if you will (I'm trademarking that btw) would be cool, I'd be too freaked all the time of being bitten by feet-as-bats and getting rabies or something.

Some questions with Gilah

If one part of your body could be detachable which would it be? What would you do with it?

Probably my hand so I could use it as a projectile if necessary. If it still retained mobility + dexterity despite the detachment, it would also be very helpful in scratching hard to reach places or scouring for lost items under furniture etc. Idk infinite uses... the potential practicality is undeniably huge.

After working on your 2020 album ‘From Where I'm Standing’ for nearly two years how do you decide when it is complete?

When I can no longer stomach the songs and have lost all desire to continue working on them. Jk ha but also not jk...

In all seriousness though, it could really turn into an endless tweaking process... I decided it was complete when it felt like I brought all the songs as far as I could, and when it felt like any additional work I was doing was actually doing harm to the tracks, as opposed to any discernible good...

How do you feel about the reception of your 2020 album ‘From Where I'm Standing’ so far?

I'm very humbled by the positive reception and am incredibly appreciative of anyone who has taken the time to listen!!
I wasn't sure if it would be too sonically abrasive or bleak, so I'm so glad that folks seem to be digging it!

What shoes do you wear most often? Why?

Normally skate-hi's but these days it's been chacos because that arch support is no joke *chef's kiss*

What was the most used piece of musical gear on your 2020 release ‘From Where I'm Standing’?

Korg M1!

What has been your brightest moment of 2020 so far?

Taking photos of fungi and finally learning impossibles :)

What are your hopes for the Brooklyn music scene post COVID-19?

Hmm good Q... I hope that venues like Market Hotel and Trans Pecos return with a powerful yet gentle vengeance, and that there's a greater focus on more intimate shows, too. Though there’s not toooo many houses in which it could work, more house shows or apartment shows tailored for smaller audiences would be awesome. Love shows like that.

Any final comments? (This is your electronic soapbox for one last answer.)

Thanks again to everyone who checked out the EP :) Wishing you as much mental peace as possible during this psycho time.

If you're so inclined, check out the homies, Russy, Sipper, and Aisle Knot! Some ‘From Where I’m Standing’ remixes dropping sooooon :)
