“CAR OF THE YEAR” A fill in the blank by Caroline Sky

It's here, the all-new HARRIS. The most luxurious POLAR BEAR.you'll ever drive! The only four-door QUILT that comes equipped with dual air GYMS, power CIGARETTES, and contoured, plush leather ASTEROIDS. And, believe it or not, it is the only car in its class that can go up to a hundred thousand STILETTO HEELS.without needing an OLIVE change or a CHOCOLATE FACTORY tune-up. Run, do not OIL.to your nearest HARRIS dealer and feast your TEETH on the car that Motor IPHONE magazine calls the ELECTRIC CROISSANT of the year. As always, we save the best for last. When you see the sticker price, you are sure to shout, "SON OF A NUTCRACKER!"

Would You Rather

be able to lift things a hundred times your weight, or have control over all of the ants in the world? Why?

I feel like the only acceptable answer to this is being in control of all the world’s ants? Maybe I’m just not a fan of bugs, but…like how terrifying is the idea of trillions of ants swarming? That’s something out of a sci-fi movie and I love it. Commanding a worldwide army of ants is a crazy amount of power.

Some Questions with Caroline Sky

What are your core values as a musician?

Something that’s really central to both my ideology as a musician and human is that music is a bridge that connects people into a community. Music is more than music. Music truly is such a powerful unifier and source of connection between people, which is something I think we need now more than ever. It really is the most magical thing! work at Camp Jabberwocky, an all-ages sleep away camp for people with disabilities, and I’ve seen first hand how non-verbal campers light up at the sound of their favorite song, how calming it is for campers who might be upset, and how happy it makes everyone listening. Music is so therapeutic, and it’s because it connects us in a completely unique way. I also perform regularly at places like drug rehabilitation centers, homeless shelters, food banks, and elderly homes. Bringing joy and peace to isolated people and forming those bonds is something really important to me.

Did your experience of the voice cause any change in your creative process?

I think one of my main takeaways from the Voice is that there are a ton of people who are just as dedicated as I am, so if I’m gonna pursue music, it better be coming from the right place. It solidified to me that even though there are plenty of other artists who are incredibly talented, I’m pursuing music out of a genuine love for it. There will always be people who are better than me, and that’s a wonderful thing — it gives me something to aspire to, and takes off the pressure of “being the best.” There’s no such thing as “the best” — everyone is on their own creative journey and the best thing we can do is learn from one another and give back to others.

What was the creative drive behind Better Than This?

I wrote Better Than This about my habit of making decisions I know I’ll regret later. Returning to someone you care for is easy, but it’s not something you should do when the relationship is unhealthy. I wrote Better Than This as a reminder to myself to stop settling for treatment I don’t deserve, and it’s something I hope other people can relate to.

What do you think about the role social media plays in a modern artist’s career?

I have a love/hate relationship with social media! On one hand, it’s a great tool for connecting with people around the world and getting my music out there, but I find social media to be pretty toxic in general. These days, it’s really important for artists to have an online presence, but a part of me wishes that we had more authentic, real, live music experiences as well!

Has living in NYC impacted your songwriting?

Moving to NYC from the San Francisco Bay Area was a huge transition. It was really scary to be in the biggest city in the US, not knowing anybody, not having any connections or knowing the music scene, and have to navigate that. But I’m glad I made the move! Living in NYC is a great source of inspiration for songwriting. There are so many interesting people, so many unique experiences, and endless adventures to learn from. I’ve grown up a lot since moving to new York, and I can’t wait for the future there.
