Meet Allegra Krieger

Some musicians just have the whole emotion thing sussed, ya know? They know exactly which chords to strike to yank on the old heart strings.

Allegra Krieger does just that. With a honeyed sensitivity, her vocals are subtly sharp, and her lyrics poignant. Her music fits the bill for those “cozy fall vibe” playlists everyone starts making as soon as Trader Joe’s starts stocking only pumpkin spice products .

Below, we discuss texturally interesting carbs, iPhone recording, and the humbling power of the ocean

Grab a cuppa and cuddle up. This one’s a goodie.

Would You Rather…

If you could only eat burritos or pizza for the rest of your life, which would you choose?

I'd rather eat burritos for the rest of my life because there's more opportunity for variety in texture and flavor. Also, I think I've already consumed my fair share of pizza in this lifetime.

Some Questions with Allegra Krieger

What has been your biggest high as a musician?

To me, making music feels like a worthwhile endeavor. It’s a reason to work and improve and create for creation’s sake. It can bring joy & catharsis while informing and raising questions. I’ve learned a lot from fellow musicians in this city, and feel so lucky that I can freely write and perform amid all these inspiring creators/people.

Where is the best music store in New York City?

Retrofret in Carroll Gardens. It has beautiful guitars and fantastical staff.

What three things would you demand to be in your dressing room?

It’d be nice to have a pen & paper, red wine, & water, although, I’d never demand any of those things.

Do you have any upcoming projects that you are excited about?

Yes! I just finished my first full length LP and I am looking forward to releasing & touring it next spring.

What is objectively the best-drunk food, and why?

I don’t think there is an objectively best anything! However, when drunk, I like to eat spaghetti or cereal. I enjoy the texturally interesting foods out of bowls late at night. Ramen is good too- Anything noodle. yay!

Having recorded your last release on an i-Phone can you speak to how technology has changed the recording landscape?

It makes it easier to mark certain moments, as well as share them. Like taking a picture! I don’t know if it’s good or bad, but it is easy.

What makes a performance successful to you?

Often during performances, my anxieties & ego can hamper connecting with the music being made. In a successful performance, I hope to avoid that and deliver the songs in an honest way. Hopefully the audience leaves the show feeling something positive as well.

What is your favorite park in New York City?

Does the beach count? If so, then Jacob Riis Park. When I need to be humbled I go to the ocean. I also enjoy Prospect Park when it's cold and there is no one there.

How do you approach the songwriting process?

I don’t really have a methodical approach. Sometimes I write when there’s some pressing emotion or idea that needs release and the lyrics will come first. Other times I’m more focused on the music and that can inspire the words. Sometimes I write everything together in one fell swoop. It really depends on the day. I don’t have any routine or discipline; the songs sort of come when they want to.

What is your dream neighborhood to live in, and why?

I am very lucky because I live in my favorite neighborhood, Ditmas Park. My house has a front porch and there is a willow tree on my street. It’s quite special.

Any final comments? (This is your electronic soapbox for one last answer.)

Thanks for reading & keep an eye out for the new record!
